What is it that women want from work?
Were the issues clearer in the past? Equal pay? The opportunity
to have a career? An end to discrimination? Not so long ago a woman
would be barred from entering many jobs and professions; could lose
her job because she got married; had to accept that even when she
did exactly the same work as a man, she'd be paid less; and that
at was acceptable to dismiss routinely sexual harassment as ‘a bit
of harmless fun'.
Today many of those barriers have been knocked down. Is the world
of work now an even playing field? The statistics seem to tell a
different, more complicated story. Women make up 46% of the workforce
but are concentrated in the poorer paid service and caring sectors;
women entrepreneurs own only 13% of businesses; for women working
full time there remains a nearly 20% hourly pay gap in comparison
to men
How can the world of work be more woman friendly?
