In December 1969 at a trustees meeting two suggestions by the director were adopted which changed the NHM's exhibitions remit...

Sir Gordon Claringbull
Director: 1968-1976

“The first was to extend the scope of the exhibitions to embrace the experimental as well as the older structural approach to biology and thus deal with ecology, physiology and molecular biology, as well as the diversity of life. The second was to increase the space for exhibitions and educational services in order to overcome severe overcrowding, allow for new exhibitions and provide proper facilities for the public. ” 12
These were to lead to the development of four new exhibitions developments: Human Biology, Introducing ecology, Origin of species and Dinosaurs and their living relatives. Covering broader themes than previously possible.
