In1970s increasing funds were found to address the neglected galleries, and respond to the needs of a changing audience. In 1970 and 1971 a series of visitor surveys were carried out, and galleries and amenities were improved. The meteorite pavilion and part of the fossil mammal gallery were opened in 1970. In 1971 the Department of Central Services 13 was formed to provide exhibition design services across the museum.
The Government announced it was to introduce admission charges to national museums and galleries in 1972, which was then implemented in 1974. |
